Makhos Solutions Inc. is an Indigenous-owned company providing staffing, training, consulting and construction with a mission to empower individuals to secure meaningful, long-term employment in various industries.
Through their exclusive program, ‘Bridge the Gap’, Makhos has been actively educating and equipping businesses to possess greater awareness and create inclusive opportunities for Indigenous talent.
One persistent challenge identified by the Makhos team has been the significant technology gap faced by Indigenous businesses, schools and organizations. In response, Greentec partnered with Makhos in July 2024 to help close this digital divide.
Through this partnership, Greentec is providing refurbished electronics such as laptops, cell phones and tablets to Indigenous-run institutions across Ontario. This initiative not only enhances access to essential technology but also supports environmental sustainability by diverting tonnes of e-waste from landfills each year.
This impact is especially critical for Indigenous communities, who often live in regions most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and maintain a deep reliance on natural ecosystems.
Since July of last year, Greentec has provided over one hundred refurbished devices, working alongside Makhos every step of the way to ensure effective, sustainable and responsible use in Indigenous businesses, schools and organizations.
From 2023 to 2024, The Food Bank of Waterloo Region served 73, 615 individuals. Food insecurity is not a distant issue but one that is right here in our own neighbourhoods affecting families, children, seniors and individuals alike. As the concern continues to grow, collective action and sustainable support is needed.
In response to this need, Greentec proudly contributed $10,000 to The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. This contribution helps the organization purchase nutritious food and fund essential programs and services that provide more than just meals but offer hope and stability.
For Greentec, supporting The Food Bank was more than a donation, it was an opportunity to give back to a community that we’re deeply connected to. It was a chance to stand beside those working tirelessly to ensure that no one in Waterloo Region goes hungry, and to be part of a solution that addresses both immediate needs and long-term change.
We believe that fighting food insecurity is not a solo effort, but a shared responsibility.
Sometimes, making a global impact starts by looking inward. That’s exactly what Greentec did in its partnership with the Toronto Zoo, a collaboration rooted in environmental responsibility and conservation.
Coltan is a metallic ore and is a critical source of tantalum, an element used in the production of capacitors, found in most electronic devices. Unfortunately, the richest source of coltan lies within the rainforest of the former Republic of Congo which also serves as a habitat for the endangered Lowland Gorilla. The increased demand for coltan has not only threatened this fragile ecosystem but also put additional pressure on vulnerable wildlife populations.
The good news is, tantalum can be reused. That is where Greentec stepped in.
By collecting old cell phones, Greentec helps recover and reuse tantalum, which reduces the need for further coltan mining, helping to protect the gorillas and their habitat. Through this partnership, cell phone recycling bins are now available at the Toronto Zoo, allowing visitors to take meaningful action and support wildlife conservation - while ensuring their data has been properly wiped for their security..
Together, we're proving that small actions can drive big change for the planet, for endangered species, and for future generations.
